چکیده

We have conducted a detailed object-by-object study of a mass-complete (M∗ ≥ 1011 M ) sample of 56 galaxies at 1.4 ≤ z ≤ 2 in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-South field, showing that an accurate deblending in 24μm images is essential to properly assign to each galaxy its own star formation rate (SFR), whereas an automatic procedure often fails. This applies especially to galaxies with SFRs below the main sequence (MS) value, which may be in their quenching phase. After that, the sample splits evenly between galaxies forming stars within a factor of 4 of the MS rate (∼45 per cent), and sub-MS galaxies with SFRs ∼10–1000 times smaller (∼55 per cent). We did not find a well-defined class of intermediate, transient objects below the MS, suggesting that the conversion of a massive MS galaxy into a quenched remnant may take a relatively short time (<1 Gyr), though a larger sample should be analysed in the same way to set precise limits on the quenching time-scale. X-ray detected AGNs represent a∼30 per cent fraction of the sample, and are found among both star-forming and quenched galaxies. The morphological analysis revealed that∼50 per cent of our massive objects are bulge-dominated, and almost all MS galaxies with a relevant bulge component host an AGN. We also found sub-MS SFRs in many bulge-dominated systems, providing support to the notion that bulge growth, AGN activity and quenching of star formation are closely related to each other.

AGN feedback is now a critical component of models of galaxy formation, introduced to bring several outstanding issues of our hierarchical picture of galaxy evolution into agreement with observations [1, 2]. The energy ejected by powerful AGN is similar to the binding energy of the massive host galaxy and may therefore in principle be sufficient to offset cooling and star formation in galaxies ...

The UV properties of E+A galaxies: constraints on feedback-driven quenching of star formation

We present the first large-scale study of E+A galaxies that incorporates photometry in the ultraviolet (UV ) wavelengths. E+A galaxies are ‘post-starburst’ systems, with strong Balmer absorption lines indicating significant recent star formation, but without [OII] and Hα emission lines which are characteristic of ongoing star formation. The starburst that creates the E+A galaxy typically takes ...

Star Formation in Aegis Field Galaxies since Z=1.1 : the Dominance of Gradually Declining Star Formation, and the Main Sequence of Star-forming Galaxies

We analyze star formation (SF) as a function of stellar mass (M⋆) and redshift z in the All Wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey (AEGIS). For 2905 field galaxies, complete to 10(10)M⊙ at z < 0.7(1), with Keck spectroscopic redshifts out to z = 1.1, we compile SF rates (SFR) from emission lines, GALEX, and Spitzer MIPS 24μm photometry, optical-NIR M⋆ measurements, and HST morphol...

Massive Lyman Break Galaxies at Z ∼ 3 in the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey

We investigate the properties of 1088 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z ∼ 3 selected from a ∼ 2.63 deg2 sub-region of the First Look Survey field using the ground-based multi-color data and the Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared data at 3–8 and 24 μm. With the wide area and the broad wavelength coverage, we sample a large number of “rare” u-band dropouts which are massive (M∗ > 10M⊙), allowing...

Mass downsizing and “top-down” assembly of early-type galaxies

Aims. We present a new analysis of the rest-frame B-band COMBO-17 and DEEP2 luminosity functions (LFs) of early-type galaxies (ETGs) as a function of luminosity and mass. Our aim is to place new stringent constraints on the evolution of ETGs since z ∼ 1. Methods. We correct the LF(z) data for the luminosity dimming assuming pure luminosity evolution. However, instead of relying on stellar popul...
